Visas are necessary by all nationals apart from those of Malta and Arab countries. All Egyptian Consulates are authorized to grant entry visas. Passport Authorities at all ports of entry are also empowered to grant visas on the spot. Passports must be valid for at least three months subsequent to the date of the proposed visit to Egypt. If your voyage is on overland visas can be got from neighbouring countries without much of a problem. You can request either for a single entry visa which entitles the holder to a reside for one month and is valid for presentation for up to three months, or for a multiple entry visa which is restricted for up to three visits. A visa cannot be obtained at the Israeli border.

There is usually a two week grace period after the expiry date of a visa. Visas can be extended for up to a the time of six months but you will usually be required to show you have enough money to maintain your stay and show bank receipts indicating you have enough sufficient money. Credit card reciepts for purchases or cash advances are generally not accepted.

You can tour the Sinai area between the Israeli border crossing of Taba and Sharm el-Sheikh without a visa, but you will only be issued with the entry stamp permitting you to stay 14 days.

It is not a necessity for nationals entering Egypt to register with the police within one week of arrival – this was scrapped off in early 1997.
